Pre and Post Auction Services
A convenient distance from the major West End auction houses (Christie’s, Sotheby’s, Bonhams, Phillips), Apelles is on hand to assist auction buyers and sellers.
Pre auction services:
When buying paintings direct from auction there are several practical factors to consider:
What is the condition of the painting?
Is the frame appropriate or will it require repair or replacement?
Where will the artwork hang and what are the logistics to get it there?
What are the total auction house fees, both when buying and consigning at auction?
All of these factors contribute greatly to the final presentation of the artwork and the ultimate cost of acquiring and displaying it. Where possible Apelles is available to always provide first hand inspections of an artwork.
Post auction services:
After a successful auction purchase Apelles offers the following services:
Timely collection of an artwork from the auction house.
Temporary secure and insured storage at our West End premises.
Appraisal of the artwork, to recommend and implement any conservation and framing requirements.
Organisation of shipping to and installation in a client’s chosen location.
When selling a painting at auction it’s important to consign it to an auction house with an audience reach appropriate to that artwork. For example, certain paintings may fare better in regional auctions, not the larger London houses. In other circumstances it may be that European or US auctions are the best option. Apelles can use a range of contacts in the auction world to consign your painting to an auction house that will maximise the chance of a successful sale. If you are considering sending an artwork to auction or interested in purchasing a lot, please do contact us for any advice.
